The director behind Godzilla Minus One is moving into original territory at a major Hollywood studio. Takashi Yamazaki has been set to write and direct Nue, an original science fiction film at 20th Century Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Ridley Scott and Michael Pruss will produce via their Scott Free banner, alongside Keiichiro Moriya and Go Abe of Robot Communications, and Georgina Pope and Amie Horiuchi of Toho-Tombo.
Plot details remain undisclosed, but Yamazaki has described the project as a personal concept developed over many years. "Nue has been a lifelong dream of mine," he said. "I am honored to have the opportunity to make it happen with the creative brilliance of Ridley Scott and Scott Free and the fantastic team at 20th Century Studios. I will do my upmost to ensure this becomes a fantastic movie for all to see."
Scott called it a magnificent original sci-fi film and praised Yamazaki's visionary and skillful story-telling, exemplified by his superb production of Godzilla Minus One. David Greenbaum and Steve Asbell at 20th Century Studios said: "Takashi Yamazaki's filmmaking resonates with audiences across cultures and generations. What he achieved with Godzilla Minus One was extraordinary, combining spectacle with deeply emotional storytelling."
Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One earned $116 million globally and took the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Two more projects follow: Godzilla Minus Zero arrives in November 2026, with Grandgear, a giant robot film produced by J.J. Abrams, set for 2028.
