Sadie Sink has been remarkably tight-lipped about her role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day since casting was announced. In a new interview published Tuesday, the actress offered the most candid glimpse yet into how she came to join the franchise. It did not involve a single line of sides.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton bypassed the traditional audition process entirely, reaching out to Sink directly on the basis of their prior collaboration. The two worked together on The Glass Castle in 2017. Cretton offered her the part without ever asking her to read for it. She accepted. Sink did not receive a script until she landed in London, where principal photography was already underway.

"I knew that Marvel was a big deal and had a big brand, especially Spider-Man," Sink said. Once on set, she found the environment less intimidating than expected. Of Tom Holland, who returns as Peter Parker for a fourth solo outing, she said he "could not have been more welcoming."

Her character remains one of the more tenaciously guarded secrets in recent Marvel memory. Fan theories, amplified by leaked merchandise images, have converged on the possibility that Sink is playing Jean Grey. The X-Men telepath would mark the MCU's first significant integration of a mutant figure into the Spider-Man universe. Marvel and Sony have not confirmed or denied the speculation.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, and Jon Bernthal. It opens July 31, 2026.
