Jason Clarke has joined Supermax, the action thriller from Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax, according to Deadline. Clarke is the latest addition to a cast that now includes Will Smith, AnnaSophia Robb, and Jaafar Jackson, with David Gordon Green directing from a script by David Weil and David J. Rosen.
The film follows two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world's most secure prison. Will Smith plays Rex, one of the agents. AnnaSophia Robb plays his partner. The setup is described as propulsive and twist-laden, according to Deadline. Clarke's character is being kept under wraps, suggesting a role more than incidental to the plot.
Jaafar Jackson, whose character is also undisclosed, arrives here from Michael, the Lionsgate biopic in which he played his uncle. That film grossed over $1 billion globally, according to multiple reports. Supermax is his first announced project since that debut.
Will Smith produces via his Westbrook company alongside Adam Fishbach. Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona also produce. The project was acquired by Amazon after originating as a potential Cannes pitch, according to KinoCheck. Filming is scheduled to begin in Australia this month, with the finished film heading to Prime Video worldwide.
For Smith, Supermax marks his first original non-franchise studio film in recent years. For Jackson, it is simply the first announced role that is not a member of his own family.
