Keanu Reeves is in negotiations to lead an untitled live-action/CG hybrid Lego film at Universal Pictures, with Josh Cooley set to direct, according to Deadline and Variety. The project reunites Reeves and Cooley, who worked together on Toy Story 4, in which Reeves voiced the stunt-figure Duke Caboom. Reeves reprised that role in Toy Story 5, which opened to $160 million domestically on June 19.

The announcement arrives at a critical moment for the franchise at Universal. The studio acquired the Lego film rights in 2020 but has yet to move a project into production. Previous iterations attached directors Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish without result. According to insiders cited by Deadline, Universal has approximately six months to reach pre-production before the rights could lapse and return to market.

Plot details remain under wraps. Whether Reeves will appear on screen or voice a character is also unconfirmed, according to Variety. Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians of The Lego Group are producing. Universal declined to comment.

The original Warner Bros. Lego films, released from 2014 to 2019, grossed a combined $1.1 billion globally and included The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie. Universal's own Lego-adjacent effort, the 2023 Pharrell Williams documentary Piece by Piece, earned $10 million against a $16 million budget. The Reeves-Cooley package represents the studio's most serious bid yet to activate those rights before they expire.
