Toy Story 5 opened to $160 million domestically from 4,425 North American theaters this weekend, according to Variety, surpassing Universal's Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131.7 million) as the biggest domestic debut of 2026. The result also eclipses the franchise's previous record: Toy Story 4's $120 million opening in 2019.
Internationally, the Andrew Stanton-directed sequel posted $152 million for a combined $312 million global debut, per Deadline. That figure ranks as the second-best Pixar worldwide opening ever, behind only Inside Out 2's $384 million. Latin America led all overseas markets at $55.2 million, with Mexico alone delivering $26.6 million. The UK contributed $20 million, its best MPA opening of the year to date, and China opened to $18 million.
Reception tracks alongside the commercial performance. The film holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 'A' CinemaScore exit poll grade. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack return to voice Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, respectively. Taylor Swift contributes a song titled 'I Knew It, I Knew You' to the soundtrack.
The film follows the toys' owner as she becomes absorbed in a smart tablet device called Lilypad, extending the series' long-running meditation on childhood attachment and obsolescence into a digital-age frame. The actual opening substantially outpaces the $275 million global tracking projections circulating earlier this week. The 2026 domestic box office now stands at $4.47 billion, running 13% ahead of last year.
