Beth de Araújo's Josephine swept the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, winning both the Grand Jury Prize Dramatic and the Audience Award Dramatic. The film then competed for the Golden Bear at Berlin. Now it has a trailer and a release date.
Sumerian Pictures acquired the film in a seven figure deal and has set a November 20 opening in the US and UK. The first trailer arrived on August 11.
The film follows an eight year old named Josephine, played by newcomer Mason Reeves, after she witnesses a brutal assault in Golden Gate Park. Fear and paranoia take hold. Her parents are left searching for a way through. Channing Tatum plays Damien; Gemma Chan plays Claire.
De Araújo, whose debut Soft & Quiet (2022) announced a formally precise and unsparing sensibility, wrote Josephine as autobiographical fiction. Variety's Peter Debruge called it the "standout" of the festival, praising de Araújo for daring "to confront the life-shattering intersection of sex and violence in our culture."
Josephine holds a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86 on Metacritic. It arrives in November with a full awards campaign.
