The American Film Institute announced on October 21, 2026, that Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award. The gala tribute is set for April 24, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

"Tom Cruise is a global icon," said Kathleen Kennedy, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, citing his "deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together." The AFI describes the honor as "the highest honor for a career in film." Proceeds from the gala support the organization’s education and arts initiatives.

Cruise’s four Oscar nominations span four decades: Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Jerry Maguire (1996), Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia (1999), and Best Picture as a producer of Top Gun: Maverick (2022). He received an Honorary Oscar at the 2025 Governors Awards. His films have generated nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office.

Cruise joins a list that includes Tom Hanks (2002), Meryl Streep (2004), Denzel Washington (2019), Nicole Kidman (2024), and Francis Ford Coppola (2025). Eddie Murphy received the 51st award at the Dolby Theatre in April 2026, with the gala streaming later on Netflix.

Cruise is currently in theaters in Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. He is also set to return as Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder 2.
