Toronto International Film Festival announced its 2026 documentary program on Wednesday, headlined by Alex Gibney’s Musk, a 232-minute examination of the world’s richest man scheduled for its North American premiere at the festival.
The program comprises 21 films from 20 countries, with 18 world premieres. More than two-thirds of the films are directed by women. Thom Powers, who programs the section, told Variety the film is “arguably the most epic documentary that Alex Gibney has ever made” and said production spanned nearly four years.
Musk will screen at the 83rd Venice Film Festival before its TIFF appearance. Bleecker Street holds U.S. theatrical rights and will release the film on October 16. HBO Documentary Films holds North American streaming rights.
The opening night selection is Rapinoe, Rebeca Huntt’s world premiere portrait of U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe. Also in the program: Barbara Kopple’s Union Town, about New York City workers organizing against UPS, Amazon, and DoorDash; Maiken Baird’s Edward Said: Between Worlds; Barry Avrich’s Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been; and Sophie Fiennes’ The Pervert’s Guide to Utopias, the third film in her philosophical series with Slavoj Žižek.
TIFF runs September 10 through 20.
