DC Studios' Supergirl is tracking for a domestic opening of $40M to $50M when it opens in 3,600 theaters on June 26, according to Deadline. The film's global debut is projected in the $80M to $90M range, with international markets contributing in the low $40Ms.

The more unusual challenge is who it opens against. Toy Story 5, which debuted to $159.6M domestically in its first weekend, is projected to earn $88M to $96M in its second frame. That positions the Pixar sequel to potentially defeat a new wide release on its own opening weekend.

For DC Studios, the numbers carry weight beyond a single weekend. Supergirl, with a $170M production budget, is the second feature under James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU reboot, following Superman's $125M domestic debut last summer. Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El with Craig Gillespie directing.

By recent DC benchmarks, the tracking represents a clear improvement over Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ($27.4M) and Shazam: Fury of the Gods ($30.1M), both from 2023, and is comparable to The Flash's $55M debut that same year. All three underperformed against expectations.

Whether Gunn's DCU has built an audience willing to sustain a run beyond opening weekend is the question this weekend begins to answer.
