First reactions to Craig Gillespie's Supergirl arrived June 21, five days before the film's June 26 U.S. theatrical opening. Early responses broadly praised lead performances while splitting on the film's narrative choices.
Supergirl is the second entry in James Gunn's DC Universe, following Superman (2025), which grossed $618 million worldwide. The film adapts Tom King's comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. Milly Alcock plays Kara Zor-El in her first starring DCU role, supported by Jason Momoa as mercenary Lobo, Matthias Schoenaerts as villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and David Corenswet returning briefly as Superman.
Critics reached for Mad Max, Guardians of the Galaxy, and John Wick to describe the film's tone. "Milly Alcock is the perfect Kara," wrote That Hollywood Show. The Direct concluded: "Jason Momoa is clearly born to play Lobo." Corenswet's Superman cameo drew unanimous praise across responses.
One production note: Alcock's cape was reportedly manufactured using the same fabric as Christopher Reeve's 1978 Superman costume, according to Deadline.
Supergirl opens Friday, June 26, with Thursday preview screenings beginning June 25. The film's premiere is scheduled for Brooklyn on June 22.
