Sarah Snook is returning to HBO. The network has ordered development of The Birds, a limited series reimagining of Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 thriller, with Snook attached to star and executive produce, according to Deadline.
Snook plays Myra Massey, a traveling magistrate who returns to her Alaskan hometown with her young daughter after a bitter custody battle. She investigates the suspicious disappearance of a childhood friend while facing what Deadline describes as "vicious, deadly bird attacks inexplicably tied to the crime."
Tom Spezialy, a veteran of HBO's The Leftovers and Watchmen, wrote the pilot and will executive produce. David Heyman and Danny Samit of Heyday Television are also executive producers, alongside Jennifer Gabler Rawlings of Omni Artists. HBO is co-producing with Universal Global Television; Universal Pictures holds the rights to Hitchcock's film and the du Maurier estate controls the underlying novella.
The package was first shopped to buyers over the summer before landing at HBO, according to Variety. It is the third major attempt to revive the property. A mid-2000s feature remake with Naomi Watts collapsed before production; a 2017 BBC adaptation written by Conor McPherson was never produced.
Snook won an Emmy for playing Shiv Roy across four seasons of Succession. She is a 2026 Emmy nominee for Peacock's All Her Fault. No premiere date has been announced.
