Thomas Vinterberg is heading to Netflix. The director of Another Round and The Hunt will direct The Apology, a new series produced with A24 UK, starring Gwyneth Paltrow in her first leading television role.

Netflix gave the project a two-season order, acquiring it preemptively after a competitive situation, according to The Wrap. Jinny Howe, the streamer's head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, led the deal.

The series was created by Joe Murtagh, the writer behind The Woman in the Wall. The story follows Evelyn Amspoker (Paltrow) and her husband Caleb, whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a case that drew national attention. When a stranger appears and confesses, justice seems possible. Then the couple learns the killer may receive a reduced sentence. What they decide to do next is the center of the story.

For Paltrow, the role marks a departure. Her previous TV credits include a recurring arc on The Politician and hosting The Goop Lab on Netflix. This is her first time leading a TV drama across multiple seasons. Vinterberg and Paltrow will also executive produce alongside Murtagh and Joe Hipps of Cut To.

Vinterberg won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film for Another Round in 2021. No production schedule or premiere date has been announced for The Apology.
