Romy and Michele's High School Reunion arrived in 1997 as a portrait of female friendship too sincere to be mistaken for irony. Its heroines were not witty or self-aware. They were loyal, delusional in the best way, and genuinely convinced they had invented Post-its. That particular mix made the film a cult object. Nearly three decades later, its sequel is officially in production.
Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino marked the first day of filming on Friday at 20th Century Studios. The project is heading to Hulu in the United States and to Disney+ internationally for bundle subscribers. Tim Federle directs. Robin Schiff, who wrote the original, returns to write the sequel.
"After 30 years, we have a sequel," Sorvino said. "This is the biggest dream project ever, and I couldn't be more excited."
The returning cast is extensive. Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell are all back. New additions include Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham. Mona May, the costume designer behind the candy-colored looks of the original, rejoins the production.
Kudrow and Sorvino serve as executive producers alongside Schiff and producer Laurence Mark. No release date has been announced. For a film that spent nearly 30 years in the category of things that would never happen, production is already the answer.
