The Career
Pedro Pascal was born on April 2, 1975, in Santiago, Chile. His family fled the Pinochet dictatorship shortly after his birth, settling eventually in Texas and California. He spent nearly two decades in theatre and minor television roles before landing Oberyn Martell in the fourth season of Game of Thrones in 2014. A single season was enough to establish him as someone worth watching.
What followed was a patient kind of ascent. Narcos gave him a lead role with real moral texture. The Mandalorian made him a household name without showing his face for most of its run. The Last of Us earned him a SAG Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series and placed him among the few performers who can carry both franchise spectacle and slow-burn drama with equal conviction.
The film career has kept pace. He played the villain in Wonder Woman 1984, a cartel figure turned superfan opposite Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a Roman general in Gladiator II, and Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Each role required a different version of the same quality: presence under pressure. None of them required this kind of stillness.
The Cello
In Behemoth!, Tony Gilroy casts Pascal as Alex Serian, a third-generation studio musician recording a score alone in a studio while fragmented, non-linear memories surface around him. The film covers family history, emotional distance, and the weight of things left unresolved. The score was written by nine composers working as the Behemoth Collective, and critics praised it widely. The music is not background. It is the structure.
The film premiered as the Centerpiece selection at the 64th New York Film Festival on October 2, 2026. Reactions to Pascal's performance were immediate and sharp. Variety's Jazz Tangcay called him "captivating and mesmerizing to watch." Awards Radar's Joey Magidson described "a terrific performance" in a film that is "formally clever." One critic wrote that the work is "fantastic because so much of the performance is internal." The film carries mixed overall reactions, but Pascal is not what divides people.
Behemoth! opens December 4, 2026, through Searchlight Pictures.
What's Next
The conversation around Behemoth! has moved quickly from festival reactions to awards speculation. Pascal reprised Din Djarin in The Mandalorian and Grogu earlier this year and is expected to continue as Reed Richards in the MCU. But Behemoth! occupies a different space. It is the kind of film that actors point to later. A decade after Oberyn Martell, the question is no longer whether Pascal can hold a franchise. Behemoth! asks whether he can hold a room with almost nothing else in it. The answer, for now, appears to be yes.
