Maya Hawke has been cast in the live-action Magic: The Gathering film from Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment, Deadline first reported on Wednesday. It is the first confirmed casting for the project.
According to sources cited by Deadline, Hawke's specific role has not been disclosed. The film is designed as an ensemble piece, and her part is described as central. She was offered the role rather than auditioning.
Matt Johnson, the Canadian filmmaker behind Blackberry and Tony, is directing from a script by Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. The writers were brought on in June 2025; Johnson joined the project roughly eight months later and has been revising the screenplay.
Development on a Magic: The Gathering film dates to the mid-2010s, when it began at 20th Century Fox. That version was shelved after Disney's acquisition of the studio. Hasbro subsequently partnered with Legendary, the studio behind Dune, to build a cinematic universe around its properties.
Hawke currently appears in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping as District 3 tribute Wiress, which opens November 20. No release date or wider cast has been announced for the Magic film.
