Isabelle Fuhrman is set to lead Heartache, a sci-fi thriller directed by Beth Fletcher, who makes her feature debut with the project. The film is currently shooting in Massachusetts.
Mark Ashin wrote the screenplay, which is set in a near future where heartbreak is not a metaphor. Fuhrman plays a woman whose search for love becomes entangled with obsession and control. Fletcher has described the world she built as one where "it's safer to be alone," according to Deadline.
Ashin produces through Page 8 Pictures alongside Sionne Elise, Dylan Matlock, and JP Ouellette. Circa 1888, the production company behind the 2021 Sundance hit Mass, is also attached. Fuhrman holds an executive producer credit. Ashin called her performance "beyond what I could have hoped for," per Deadline.
Fletcher's earlier short films have screened at TIFF, RiverRun, and MoMA. Heartache is her first feature. No distributor has been announced.
Fuhrman broke out with the 2009 horror film Orphan and returned to the franchise with Orphan: First Kill in 2022. Her 2021 sports drama The Novice earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead. She next appears in Netflix's The 99ers, a drama centered on the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, slated for 2027.
