American Cinema Editors has named John Carpenter as the recipient of its Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award. ACE made the announcement October 28. Carpenter will be honored at the 77th annual ACE Eddie Awards on February 6, 2027, at UCLA's Royce Hall, with actor and comedian Patton Oswalt hosting.
"John Carpenter makes movies that get under your skin and stay there," said ACE president Sabrina Plisco. Plisco cited Carpenter's working relationship with his editing teams as the basis for the selection: the director "has always trusted his editors to help him find it," she said.
Carpenter's directing credits include Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, They Live, and Starman. The ACE honor centers specifically on his editorial collaborations, positioning the award as much as a tribute to the editors who shaped his films as to the director himself.
Two editors will also receive Career Achievement Awards at the ceremony. Bonnie Koehler, whose credits include 15 feature films and television work on L.A. Law and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, will be honored alongside Christopher Nelson, whose work includes Six Feet Under, Mad Men, Fargo, and the series finale of Lost. Nelson won a Primetime Emmy for the Lost finale.
Nominations for competitive editing categories will be announced January 14, 2027. Ang Lee received the prior Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 76th ceremony in February 2026.
