Jesse Eisenberg is returning to directing with The Debut, an original musical set in the world of New Jersey community theater. The film will make its UK premiere as the Closing Night Gala of the 70th BFI London Film Festival on October 18, 2026, at the Royal Festival Hall. A world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival is set for September.
Eisenberg wrote the screenplay, composed the original songs, and directs. He also appears in the cast. Julianne Moore leads as Mona Friedman, a shy woman who finds herself unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical. Paul Giamatti plays Jerry, the domineering director. The ensemble includes Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, Bernadette Peters, Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy, and Bonnie Milligan.
The score is by Emile Mosseri. Choreography is by Andy Blankenbuehler. Drew Daniels serves as cinematographer. The film was produced by Emma Stone and Dave McCary through their Fruit Tree banner, alongside Ali Herting, with Topic Studios.
A24 will release The Debut in the U.S. with a limited run beginning December 11, expanding wide for Christmas. Lionsgate will distribute in the UK on January 15.

The Debut is Eisenberg's third feature as director, following the Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning A Real Pain (2024).
