Neon has released the first trailer for Luca Guadagnino's Artificial, setting a world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5 and a limited theatrical release on Christmas Day ahead of a wide rollout in January 2027.
Andrew Garfield plays Sam Altman, the OpenAI CEO whose sudden firing in November 2023, and reinstatement five days later, form the spine of the film. Guadagnino directed from a screenplay by Simon Rich, with original music by Damon Albarn.
The ensemble covers OpenAI's key figures and the wider tech world: Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Chris O'Dowd, Mark Rylance, Zosia Mamet, and Billie Lourd in supporting roles.
The film's path to release was turbulent. Amazon MGM originally backed Artificial before dropping the project over the summer, after the company announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI. Netflix, A24, and Focus Features all passed before Neon stepped in to acquire distribution rights in June 2026.
With a Christmas Day platform release and a New York Film Festival premiere, Neon is positioning Artificial as a late-season awards contender.
