Matt Reeves is not directing the final weeks of The Batman: Part II. He is still the director of the film.
Warner Bros. confirmed earlier this month that Reeves stepped away from production to attend to an ongoing family matter. Steven Soderbergh, an admirer of Reeves's work, approached him and offered to help. He is now completing the film's final stretch of principal photography, carrying out Reeves's vision with the existing cast and crew. "The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly," Soderbergh said, according to TheWrap. Reeves responded on X: "Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II."
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn was equally direct on Threads. "Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be," he wrote.
Speaking to GamesRadar+ on Monday, Pattinson offered his first public comments on the situation, calling Soderbergh's involvement "incredibly generous" and "completely selfless." He noted that Reeves "had put so much work into the script" and said the production was "almost done."
Behind the camera, Erik Messerschmidt replaces Greig Fraser, who departed to shoot Sony's Beatles films. Michael Giacchino returns as composer. The expanded cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry alongside returning players Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, and Jayme Lawson. The Batman: Part II opens February 18, 2028. The first film grossed $772.3 million worldwide.
