Alex Garland's adaptation of Elden Ring is heading to the American Film Market with a budget that no standalone project has ever brought to a film or television market before.
According to Deadline, A24 has fully financed the production at a budget between $175 million and $200 million, closer to the upper end. Amazon MGM Studios pre-empted the market by acquiring a significant portion of international pay-1 streaming rights in a deal reported to be worth tens of millions of dollars, leaving international theatrical rights still available for buyers at AFM, which runs November 10 through 15 in Los Angeles.
The film stars Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, and Nick Offerman. Industrial Light & Magic is handling visual effects. Garland's Warfare cinematographer David J. Thompson returns as director of photography. The adaptation draws from a game world built with creative input from George R. R. Martin.
A24 is still seeking a studio co-financing partner, according to The Playlist. The film is currently in post-production and is set for a 2028 theatrical release.
The scale marks a significant moment for the studio. Their previous most expensive project reportedly cost in the $60 to $70 million range. Garland, whose recent work includes the lean Iraq war film Warfare and the political thriller Civil War, has not previously worked anywhere close to this budget.
