A24 and Michael Sarnoski strip the romance from Robin Hood. The Death of Robin Hood, which opened nationwide on June 19, 2026, finds the legendary outlaw aged, wounded, and far from heroic. Hugh Jackman plays him as a man long past his prime. Sarnoski directed the film from his own spec script, following previous work on Pig (2021) and A Quiet Place: Day One (2024).
The story picks up after a failed battle, Robin gravely injured and taken in at a priory run by Sister Brigid, played by Jodie Comer. Bill Skarsgård co-stars as Little John, alongside Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe. According to Variety, the film was shot over 30 days in Northern Ireland on a production budget of approximately $20 million.
Sarnoski told Variety that Jackman was central to the project from the beginning. "Hugh understood the character. He could bring the viciousness that I needed, like we've seen him do in 'Prisoners' and 'Logan,' but he's such a kind, warm person that no matter how many kids he kills and horrible things he does, you believe he can be redeemed."
On the title, Sarnoski was direct: "For me it felt like a chapter in an old book. I'm not trying to trick the audience about the tone of the story." A24, he added, was immediately sold: "When A24 came on board, they eventually were like 'we can market the shit out of this title.'"
The film holds a 69 percent Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes from 94 reviews. Critics describe it as trading "derring-do for ultraviolence," with Jackman's haunted performance drawing particular attention. Sarnoski is already in development on a live-action adaptation of the video game Death Stranding for A24, with plans to shoot in Iceland.
