Carter Burwell has never scored a franchise. He does not write themes people can whistle. What he writes is harder to describe: the feeling that arrives just before something goes wrong, or just after, when the characters have not processed it yet.

His first screen credit was Blood Simple, the 1985 debut of Joel and Ethan Coen. He had no prior film work. The collaboration held for sixteen films, with exceptions only for O Brother, Where Art Thou and Inside Llewyn Davis.

The Method

Burwell's scores rarely announce themselves. No Country for Old Men operates mostly on silence, with Burwell entering only when grief surfaces. The Banshees of Inisherin, his third Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score, uses harp, flute, and glockenspiel: a deliberately childlike instrument palette pressed against something devastatingly adult. Carol, which earned his first nomination in 2015, is built on longing, melodies that circle without resolution.

Early in his career, he cited punk rock's ethos as a formative influence. The specifics of genre mattered less than the idea: music as stance, not decoration.

The Collaborators

The Coen Brothers are his longest relationship, but the map of his career extends outward. Spike Jonze's Being John Malkovich (1999) got a score as strange as the premise. Todd Haynes has returned to him twice. Martin McDonagh first used him on In Bruges in 2008 and has not worked with anyone else since. Wild Horse Nine is their fifth film together.

Two of those McDonagh collaborations, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin, earned Burwell Academy Award nominations. A third came from Todd Haynes' Carol. Three nominations. Zero wins.

Easter Island

Wild Horse Nine premiered at Venice in September 2026. John Malkovich won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. The film is set on Rapa Nui in February 1973, weeks before the Chilean coup, following two aging CIA operatives. Timeout described Burwell's contribution as a "soulful Carter Burwell score" that injects deeper melancholy into the film's comedic premise. The Film Stage called it tender and folksy.

Wild Horse Nine opens November 6 through Searchlight Pictures. It is almost certainly not the last conversation about his Oscar record.
