Warner Bros.' Practical Magic 2 debuted at number one this weekend with an estimated $30 million domestic, according to Box Office Mojo. The supernatural sequel stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprising their roles as the Owens sisters from the 1998 original, under the direction of Susanne Bier. The opening landed at the low end of the studio's projected $30 to $35 million range, falling short of earlier $40 million projections cited by Variety. Combined with $16 million from 77 international markets, the film's global opening reached approximately $46 million against a reported $75 million production budget.
The debut ended Spider-Man: Brand New Day's six-week run at number one. The Sony blockbuster added $8.4 million in its seventh weekend, bringing its domestic total to $935 million and its worldwide cumulative to $2.46 billion. Earlier this month the film set a record as the fastest to cross $900 million domestically, doing so in 36 days, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, according to Variety.
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey held at third with $7.4 million, lifting its nine-week domestic total past $600 million. Runner, directed by Scott Waugh and starring Alan Ritchson, opened in fourth with $6.4 million through Angel Studios. Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the top five with $4.1 million in its third weekend, for a $45.6 million domestic cumulative.
