The Labor Day weekend was quiet on new arrivals, with Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey reclaiming the top spot and Spider-Man: Brand New Day approaching a billion dollars in North America.
The Odyssey earned $13 million from 2,312 theaters over the three-day frame, a 9.4% decline that signals sustained audience demand in its eighth weekend. Its North American cumulative total now stands at $584.7 million. According to trade reports, the film has crossed $1 billion worldwide, making it Nolan's highest-grossing release.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped 51.9% to $10.83 million in its sixth domestic weekend, bringing its North American total to $910.6 million. A domestic billion is within reach.
The weekend's only wide opener, Paramount's By Any Means, debuted at #3 with $7.4 million from 2,903 locations. Directed by Elegance Bratton and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg, it is a soft start for Paramount's fall slate. Ketchup's Coyote vs. Acme added $7.09 million in its third frame, reaching $29.6 million overall. Disney's 20th-anniversary reissue of the Pixar original Cars opened at #5 with $6.1 million from 2,900 theaters.
Labor Day Monday figures will bring the extended four-day totals when reported.
