About

Trần Tấn Hậu (2 July 1933 - 28 November 1992), best known by his stage name Y Vân, was a Vietnamese composer, songwriter and musician. Rising to prominence in the late 1950s with disco-influenced tracks and slow rock ballads, he was a pivotal figure in shaping the sounds of modern Vietnamese light pop music and the flourishing pop culture of South Vietnam. After 1975, he remained with the new Huong Mien Nam's Artists Troupe and Ho Chi Minh City's Radio, scoring films, stages and cultural events; his notable works during this time include soundtrack for the first installation of Le Hoang Hoa's espionage thriller "Cards on the Table" [Ván bài lật ngửa] and the ending song for "Sơn ca trong thành phố"[Skylark in the City](1983). He passed away at the age of 60, and in 2025 became the subject of his grandaughter Khoa Ha's documentary "Y Van: The Lost Sounds of Saigon".
