Kurt Goldberger (8 September 1919 – 20 September 2004) was a Czechoslovak documentary filmmaker and writer whose work spanned scientific, educational, and socially engaged cinema. Born in Opava to a German-speaking Jewish family, he emigrated to Great Britain in the late 1930s, studying physics and natural sciences while working in British film studios. During the Second World War, he joined the Czechoslovak Armed Forces in exile and led a film unit documenting operations on the Western Front; after the war, he returned to Czechoslovakia and made The Journey Home (1946), drawn from his wartime footage. Following the Communist takeover in 1948, Goldberger worked primarily in scientific and educational filmmaking, developing innovative uses of contact sound, close-range cinematography, and explanatory narrative.
