The Last Photograph arrives at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, 2026 — in the Special Events section, 135 minutes long, with no distributor attached.
That last detail is the notable one. Zack Snyder, who directed Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League, is bringing his first independent film to a prestige festival without a studio behind it. According to AV Club, the TIFF premiere is the film's best available path to finding distribution.
The film follows Ethan Black, an ex-DEA operative who returns to the mountains of South America to search for his missing niece and nephew after their diplomat parents are murdered. A war photographer — the only witness to the killers' faces — becomes his unlikely partner. Stuart Martin leads the cast as Black, with Fra Fee, Jackie Kay, and Sergio Herrera in supporting roles. Hans Zimmer composed the score alongside Omer Benyamin and Steven Doar.
The production is a structural departure from Snyder's industrial-scale work. Filmed in Iceland, Colombia, and the Amazon jungle, with principal photography wrapping in November 2025, the film was shot by Snyder himself. He produced alongside Deborah Snyder, Gianni Nunnari, and Wesley Coller through The Stone Quarry and Hollywood Gang Productions. The screenplay is credited to Kurt Johnstad from Snyder's story. Snyder has described the project as a personal take on Apocalypse Now, with an aesthetic influenced by Terrence Malick.
The project has been in development since the mid-2000s. Rights lapsed and were reacquired in 2016; the film was greenlit in August 2025. Whether a buyer materializes in Toronto or the film takes a longer road to release, September 13 is the first public screening it has had.
