Zack Snyder's The Last Photograph had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, 2026, screening at the John Bassett Theatre. The film entered the festival as an acquisition title, with no studio or streamer yet attached.
The Last Photograph follows Ethan Black, an ex-DEA operative who travels to South America after the murder of his brother and sister-in-law. Searching for his missing niece and nephew, he links up with a war photographer who witnessed the killings. Snyder has described the film as his personal take on Apocalypse Now, blending action imagery with a Terrence Malick sensibility. The cast includes Stuart Martin, Fra Fee, Costanza Andrade, and Marlon Moreno. Hans Zimmer, Omer Benyamin, and Steven Doar composed the score. Running time: 135 minutes.
The project has a long history. It originated in 2011 under director Niels Arden Oplev, with Christian Bale and Sean Penn attached. Snyder took over as director in 2016. The film was briefly titled Horse Latitudes and suffered production delays due to COVID-19. It was greenlit again in August 2025 with a new cast. Principal photography took place in Iceland, Colombia, and Los Angeles, wrapping in November 2025. Snyder also served as cinematographer on the project.
Without a distribution deal, Toronto is the first public test. What buyers make of it over the next week will determine the film's path to release.
