A24's You Can See Everything opened to an estimated $15 million in its first weekend, according to Bloomberg and Deadline. The figure ranks as the second-best documentary debut on record. The film had been projected to earn between $7 and $8 million.
Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the film documented Elizabeth Holmes across 34 days in April 2023, the final weeks before she began an eleven-year federal prison sentence for defrauding investors. A24 reported over 2,000 sellout showings across the film's 855-screen release.
The project is not a conventional documentary. Reenactments run throughout: Amanda Seyfried appears both as herself and as Holmes in reconstructed scenes, and Christopher Abbott plays Holmes's partner Billy Evans in recreated conversations. The film also examined a profit-sharing arrangement Evans held with the production. He relinquished the agreement before release.
Critical reception has been close to unanimous. The film holds a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 113 reviews, and a 99 out of 100 on Metacritic. It premiered at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival in September and screened at the New York Film Festival before opening in the United States on October 16.
At 174 minutes, it is not built for casual viewing. That it found a mass audience at that length, against a wide-release action film on the same weekend, is worth noting. A24 plans to expand the film further the following weekend.
