World War Z 2 is moving forward at Paramount Pictures, with Brad Pitt set to reprise his role as Gerry Lane and Edward Berger attached to direct. Dennis Kelly, creator of the British series Utopia, is writing the screenplay.
Pitt produces alongside Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner through Plan B Entertainment. Berger is also serving as executive producer on the project.
The sequel arrives after more than a decade of failed starts. J.A. Bayona spent nearly a year attached before departing. David Fincher went further: his version reached pre-production before budget concerns killed it. Fincher later revealed that his take bore similarities to HBO's The Last of Us, which may explain its quiet shelving once that series became cultural furniture.
The current deal came together through The Riders, the A24 film that brought Pitt and Berger together on set. By the time production wrapped, Pitt had pitched Berger on the franchise and Berger was in. Paramount co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg had flagged a sequel as a top priority at CinemaCon in April 2026.
The original World War Z, directed by Marc Forster and adapted from Max Brooks' 2006 novel, earned more than $540 million worldwide in 2013, despite a full third-act reshoot that became one of the most-analyzed production disasters in studio history. Plot details for the new version remain confidential. No production timeline has been announced.
Berger's prior films, All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, are known for restraint and moral density, not scale. What that sensibility does with a zombie blockbuster is the only real question.
