May el-Toukhy's Woman Unknown won the Golden Lion at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 12. The film, a co-production between Denmark, Sweden, and Latvia, was the only work directed by a woman to compete in Venice's main selection this year. Lead Mathilde Arcel also took the Volpi Cup for Best Actress.
The film is set in Denmark during and after the Nazi occupation. Arcel plays Marie, a young nanny and housemaid who marries her wealthy employer but carries a secret that threatens to unravel her new life. El-Toukhy co-wrote the screenplay with Maren Louise Käehne. Woman Unknown premiered at Venice on September 6, received a Centrepiece slot at TIFF on September 15, and is set for a Danish theatrical release on February 4, 2027.
Denmark has selected the film as its submission for the Best International Feature Film race at the 99th Academy Awards. The submission deadline is September 30. El-Toukhy previously drew international notice with Queen of Hearts (2019). Woman Unknown operates in a different register: colder, more controlled, rooted in occupation-era social precarity.
The film holds a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 13 reviews. At Venice, it prevailed over a competition that included John Malkovich in Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine, Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love (which took the Grand Jury Prize), and Ilya Khrzhanovsky's DAU (Silver Lion for Best Direction). The season is still early. But Woman Unknown has the shape of a film that does not leave the conversation.
