Searchlight Pictures released the full trailer for Wild Horse Nine on Wednesday, confirming a November 6 theatrical release for Martin McDonagh's fourth feature. The film had its world premiere at Venice on September 3, where it earned a nearly 15-minute standing ovation and secured John Malkovich the Volpi Cup for Best Actor.
Set in 1973, just before the Chilean coup, the film follows CIA officers Chris (Malkovich) and Lee (Sam Rockwell) as their bureau chief, MJ (Steve Buscemi), dispatches them from Santiago to Easter Island. An unexpected bond Chris forms with two local students complicates the mission. The cast also includes Tom Waits, Parker Posey, Mariana di Girolamo, and Ailín Salas. Carter Burwell scored; Ben Davis shot the film on location in Rapa Nui.
Rockwell and McDonagh previously worked together on Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), for which Rockwell won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Writing in Variety, Guy Lodge noted it had been "a long time since Malkovich was this engaged and affecting" in such a role.
The film holds a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from 63 reviews and a 79 on Metacritic. Produced by Blueprint Pictures and Film4, Wild Horse Nine opens in the US and UK on November 6.
