Walton Goggins is the latest addition to Miami Vice '85, Universal Pictures' IMAX crime film directed by Joseph Kosinski. According to Deadline, Goggins will play a villain in the film, joining John Leguizamo, who has been cast as the central cartel antagonist.

The ensemble around him is notable. Michael B. Jordan stars as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs and Austin Butler as James "Sonny" Crockett, the two undercover detectives at the film's core. Whitney Peak, Alden Ehrenreich, Edi Gathegi, Andrew Schulz, Camila Morrone, and Danny Ramirez round out the cast. Kosinski reportedly had Goggins in mind from early in the process. The actor's schedule on Prime Video's Fallout had to be resolved before a deal came together.

The film follows two undercover detectives navigating the glamour and corruption of 1980s Miami. Production begins in November, shooting in New York and Miami, with a release set for May 19, 2028. The film will be shot for IMAX.

Miami Vice '85 has assembled its cast without generating the anticipation the project probably warrants. Kosinski built Top Gun: Maverick into the highest-grossing film of its year during a quiet production run. The same accumulation is happening here. The Goggins addition makes this one of the deeper action ensembles heading into 2028. The conversation has not caught up yet.
