The director who made Alex Murphy into an American Jesus is back in Detroit.

Paul Verhoeven is involved in Amazon Prime Video's upcoming RoboCop series, executive producer James Wan confirmed at the BlumFest panel at New York Comic Con. Wan declined to specify the nature of Verhoeven's role or whether the 88-year-old director will receive an official credit.

The eight-episode series comes from Wan's Atomic Monster, now merged with Blumhouse. Dan Stevens stars as Alex Murphy, a soldier killed in combat and rebuilt as a cyborg officer. Wan is directing several episodes. Peter Ocko, known for Lodge 49, is writing and showrunning. Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, who co-wrote the original 1987 film, return as executive producers.

Verhoeven directed the 1987 original but declined to helm the sequel and has stayed away from every subsequent adaptation, including the 2014 reboot starring Joel Kinnaman. He was publicly critical of that film for abandoning his version's dark satire. He once described his own film as an "American Jesus" story, according to The Playlist.

What exactly Verhoeven brings to this version, nobody knows yet. The series does not yet have a release date on Amazon Prime Video.
