Fourteen years after The Bourne Legacy, Tony Gilroy has returned to feature filmmaking. Behemoth! world-premiered October 2 as the Centerpiece of the 64th New York Film Festival. Its international premiere follows at the BFI London Film Festival's Patrons' Gala on October 13.
Pedro Pascal plays Alex, a former child prodigy from a celebrated musical family who leaves a Chicago orchestra after a failed relationship and returns to Los Angeles to record film scores. The story moves between past and present. Original movie compositions by nine leading film industry musicians are woven into the soundtrack. Olivia Wilde plays Alex's volatile ex. Eva Victor, JoBeth Williams, Margarita Levieva, Hank Azaria, and Will Arnett round out the ensemble.
The film is also Gilroy's first original screenplay in seventeen years. Between features, he created and showran Andor for Disney+, which earned 22 Emmy nominations and two Peabody Awards over two seasons. Prior to The Bourne Legacy, he received Academy Award nominations for writing and directing Michael Clayton (2007) and wrote the first three films in the Jason Bourne franchise.
NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim called Pascal's performance "a tour de force." Gilroy described the Centerpiece invitation as "a long-held fantasy," telling the press that "NYFF has always been the benchmark for me," according to The Film Stage. He recalled being "baptized by Fitzcarraldo" as a young man, after a customer handed him a ticket to the festival while he worked at a nearby bar.
Searchlight Pictures will release Behemoth! in the United States on December 4, 2026.
