Three months after a record run, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is returning to select IMAX and 70mm screens. Universal Studios announced on October 6 that the reengagement begins October 9, giving audiences another window to see the film as it was photographed.
The Odyssey has grossed $1.77 billion worldwide, making it Universal's highest-grossing film on record before inflation adjustment. According to The Wrap, it is the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made, the highest-grossing IMAX film ever made, and the first original title, not a sequel or remake, to exceed $1 billion internationally since Avatar in 2010.
The film was the first feature shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film cameras. Hoyte van Hoytema framed every image for the full-height format. The return is constrained by supply: only 25 screens in the United States can project physical 70mm reels, and only 41 globally.
"What Chris and Emma have created will go down as one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history," said NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley, according to The Wrap.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. The film opened wide in the United States on July 17, 2026.
