The Odyssey opened to $124.5 million across 3,900 North American screens this weekend, delivering Christopher Nolan's biggest domestic launch outside the Batman franchise and Universal's all-time highest opening weekend for an R-rated film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Globally, the film added $139.6 million from 73 international markets for a worldwide debut of $264.1 million. That figure surpasses The Dark Knight Rises' $249 million global launch to set a new career record for Nolan.
Against a $250 million production budget, The Odyssey covered its costs inside opening weekend. It earned an A on CinemaScore and sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, making it Nolan's highest-rated film on the aggregator. The audience score landed at 97% verified hot.
"Christopher Nolan continues to create films that are immersive theatrical events," Universal's Jim Orr said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film stars Matt Damon in the lead role alongside Anne Hathaway.
The opening ranks as 2026's biggest live-action debut, trailing only the animated Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131 million). With awards season beginning, the combination of commercial scale and critical consensus positions The Odyssey as a significant contender.
