Searchlight Pictures has announced The Families Stone, a sequel to Tom Bezucha's 2005 holiday film, written and directed again by Bezucha. Production is set for New York this fall.
The returning ensemble includes Rachel McAdams as Amy Stone, Sarah Jessica Parker as Meredith Morton, Claire Danes as Julie Morton, Dermot Mulroney as Everett Stone, Craig T. Nelson as Kelly Stone, Luke Wilson as Ben Stone, Tyrone Giordano as Thad Stone, Elizabeth Reaser as Susannah Stone, Paul Schneider as Brad Stevenson, and Brian White as Patrick Thomas.
The one conspicuous absence is Diane Keaton, who played Sybil Stone, the matriarch whose cancer diagnosis set the original film in motion. Keaton passed away in October 2025. The sequel's plot absorbs that loss directly. According to Searchlight, The Families Stone is set "twenty years after their mother's passing," with the family reassembling for Christmas to discover that their father has invited the woman he has fallen in love with to meet them.
The title shift is worth noting. The Family Stone becomes The Families Stone. The plural accounts for two decades of growth: the children have married, separated, built their own families, and accumulated their own grief. Whether Bezucha can hold that expanded weight and still deliver a workable holiday film is the only question the casting announcement leaves open.
