Sony Pictures has set July 30, 2027 as the theatrical release date for The Comebacker, a baseball drama starring Tom Hanks and directed by Marielle Heller. The project, made in cooperation with Major League Baseball, was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Heller, who also wrote the screenplay, adapted the film from a 2024 short story by Dave Eggers. Hanks plays a pitching coach whose life unravels after a line drive strikes his pitcher on the mound. The film is produced by Hanks and longtime partner Gary Goetzman through Playtone, alongside Leah Holzer at Defiant By Nature.

Heller and Hanks previously collaborated on A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019). The Comebacker is their first project together since. Filming is scheduled to begin in October in New York.

According to Variety, Bad Bunny and Colman Domingo have been considered for supporting roles. No casting beyond Hanks has been confirmed by the studio.

The July 30, 2027 date positions The Comebacker at the peak of the MLB regular season, as pennant races begin to take shape. Hanks has not appeared in a baseball film since the 1992 A League of Their Own. The sport suits him. The mound is already set.
