The domestic summer box office reached $4.598 billion through late August, making 2026 the second best summer movie season on record, according to figures published by MovieGuide on September 2. The 2013 record stands at $4.756 billion. With Labor Day weekend still being counted through September 7, analysts project the final total will fall $18 to $22 million short of that mark.
Three films carried the season. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, released July 29, earned $891.5 million domestically and $2.33 billion worldwide, the fourth highest grossing film of all time before inflation adjustment, according to DiverseTechGeek. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey added $563.8 million domestic and $1.55 billion globally. Pixar's Toy Story 5 contributed $478.8 million domestic and $1.13 billion worldwide.
Not everything came from franchises. Original films drew younger audiences to theaters throughout the summer, a trend industry observers noted as a sign of broader theatrical health. "This has been such a spectacular moviegoing season that the numbers are just that, and the incredible mix of films presented to audiences this year has been a game changer," said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore's senior media analyst, in remarks published by MovieGuide.
The overall 2026 domestic box office stood at $7 billion through late August, 20 percent ahead of the same period in 2025, though still approximately 7 percent behind pre-pandemic 2019 performance. The final summer figure arrives after Labor Day.
