The numbers keep climbing. Spider-Man: Brand New Day added an estimated $40 million at the domestic box office on Friday, placing the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film on track for a $135-140 million second weekend. Combined with its opening, the film will reach an estimated $650 million domestically by Sunday.
Globally, the picture is even starker. After nine days of release, Brand New Day has crossed $1.32 billion worldwide. At current pace, it will become the fifth film ever to surpass $2 billion globally, with that milestone expected as early as next week. The film opened to a record $360 million domestically on July 31, the largest opening weekend in box office history, besting Avengers: Endgame's $357.1 million.
The second weekend projection of $135-140 million would rank as the third-best domestic sophomore frame on record. Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds the record at $149.2 million; Endgame is second at $147.3 million. Brand New Day has already surpassed Avengers: Infinity War's $114.7 million second weekend.
Directed by Cretton and starring Tom Holland in his fourth appearance as Peter Parker, the Sony and Marvel Studios production carries a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In second place this weekend, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey added $28.5 million for a running North American total of $458.1 million.
Whether Brand New Day can sustain enough momentum to challenge Endgame's $2.798 billion all-time global record remains an open question. What's no longer in doubt: the right Spider-Man film can still reset the industry's expectations.
