The first trailer for Remain arrived September 8. Directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan for Warner Bros., the film follows Tate, an architect who retreats to Cape Cod to design a summer home while recovering from depression, only to encounter a mysterious young woman named Wren.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Tate. Phoebe Dynevor plays Wren. Dynevor joined the project after Alicia Vikander exited the lead role, according to MovieWeb. The supporting cast includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, and Maria Dizzia. Shyamalan appears in a small role.
The story grew from a 2023 collaboration between Shyamalan and novelist Nicholas Sparks. Sparks then wrote a novel adaptation, published in October 2025. “Collaborating with M. Night Shyamalan has been one of the highlights of my career,” Sparks said, according to MovieWeb.
Production took place in Rhode Island between June and August 2025, shot on VistaVision 35mm cameras. Cinematographer Adolpho Veloso served as director of photography. James Newton Howard composed the score, marking his ninth collaboration with Shyamalan. Reshoots occurred in February 2026.
Remain was originally set for October 23, 2026. It now opens February 5, 2027. The film is Shyamalan’s follow-up to Trap (2024).
