Peter Jackson told ScreenRant that he and longtime collaborator Fran Walsh have finished writing the script for a second Adventures of Tintin film. "We've also already written the script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film," Jackson said. "That will be the next film I make."
The sequel has been in the air since the 2011 original. That film, directed by Steven Spielberg with Jackson producing, grossed $374 million worldwide against a reported $135 million budget. The domestic take was $77 million. Spielberg and Jackson had always planned to swap roles for the follow-up, with Spielberg producing and Jackson directing.
Jackson's last directed feature was The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in 2014. The intervening years brought documentary work. Tintin 2 would be his return to narrative fiction.
According to World of Reel, no studio has committed to the project. Paramount and Sony co-financed the original after Universal stepped back, and both have since changed ownership. The script is done. The production timeline is not.
If the film moves forward, the sequel is expected to draw from the Hergé story arcs The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun, continuing in the motion capture style of the first film using Weta FX technology.
