Paul Greengrass has unveiled the first trailer for The Uprising, his new historical drama about the 1381 English Peasants Revolt. Focus Features will open the film in U.S. theaters on September 11, 2026.
Andrew Garfield plays Ploughman, who leads a rebellion against the Crown forces of King Richard II, who was 14 years old at the time. The uprising was ignited in the aftermath of the Black Plague, when Richard levied a brutal poll tax to fund the Hundred Years War. An army of common people marched on London. Greengrass wrote, directed, and produced the film, applying the political urgency he brought to Bloody Sunday, United 93, and Captain Phillips to a much earlier rupture in English history.
The cast includes Jamie Bell, Thomasin McKenzie, Woody Norman as King Richard II, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Jonny Lee Miller, Cosmo Jarvis as rebel leader Wat Tyler, and Katherine Waterston. Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter, and Lars Sylvest produced alongside Greengrass. Entertainment Film Distributors handles the UK release, opening October 9.
The film went through two previous titles before arriving at this one. Developed as The Hood with Benedict Cumberbatch, then as The Rage with Matthew McConaughey as recently as 2025, it found its current shape with Garfield in the lead.
The Uprising arrives in a moment when class revolt as subject matter carries obvious contemporary weight. Greengrass has never been interested in removing that weight. The trailer does not suggest he intends to start.
