Michael Mann, 83, was hospitalized briefly on October 31 after a weapon discharged accidentally while he was holstering it at a members-only indoor shooting range in West Los Angeles. LAPD officers responded to the 11100 block of Missouri Avenue around 4 p.m. and determined the incident was accidental.

His publicist issued a statement: "On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered, resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released."

The bullet struck Mann's left thigh. Range staff provided initial medical aid before paramedics transported him to a local hospital in stable condition. He was treated and released the same day. The LAPD completed an injury report and confirmed the shooting was accidental.

Mann had been practicing with a .45-caliber handgun at the time. He has been a target shooter for decades, a discipline that has long informed the precision of the firearms sequences in his films.

According to Deadline, a source close to the filmmaker confirmed the injury will have no impact on the planned January start of production on Heat 2. The sequel adapts Mann's 2022 novel of the same name, co-written with crime novelist Meg Gardiner, which expands the universe of the 1995 original.

Mann's directing credits include Heat (1995), The Insider (1999), Collateral (2004), and Ferrari (2023).
