The 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards will present the Gotham Musical Tribute to the team behind Lionsgate's Michael at a ceremony on November 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Director Antoine Fuqua, actors Colman Domingo, Jaafar Jackson, and Nia Long, and producer Graham King will receive the honor.
Michael has earned over $1 billion worldwide since its April 2026 release, making it the highest-grossing biographical film of all time. The record previously belonged to Oppenheimer. A sequel is in development, with $30.8 million in California tax credits allocated toward production, according to the California Film Commission.
This is only the second time the Gotham has awarded a Musical Tribute. Last year, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson received the inaugural honor for Song Sung Blue. "For our second Gotham Musical Tribute, we are delighted to honor these incredibly talented actors and filmmakers," said Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham Film and Media Institute. "Their extraordinary work captures the humanity behind one of the world's most celebrated artists."
The November 30 ceremony will also include several other tributes. Danny Boyle will receive the Gotham Director Tribute for Ink. La Bola Negra takes the Gotham Vanguard Tribute. Laika Studios receives the Gotham Anniversary Tribute. Full nominees across the film categories will be announced October 27.
