The actor trained for over a year, blew out his knee, and moved his family to Atlanta. Blade never happened. Now Ali agrees with Feige: that failure was earned.

Kevin Feige said it himself. In a July 2026 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Marvel Studios president described the scrapped Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali as the biggest failure of his career, adding that he was feeling like "a gigantic loser and failure" for letting it collapse. Now Ali has weighed in.

"He said it was the biggest failure of his career and I agree. He should 100% feel that way," Ali told GQ while promoting his new film. The actor detailed what the project had cost him: over a year of sword training, a blown knee, and a family relocation to Atlanta while Marvel kept pushing production back. Blade was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. It never reached a camera. "That's a Kevin Feige question," Ali said when asked why. "I don't know why it did to this day."

What emerged from the wreckage was a different film entirely. Director Bassam Tariq, who had been attached to Blade before departing, reunited with Ali on Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The action thriller had its world premiere at TIFF on September 12 and opened in theaters on September 25. Ali plays Latif, a devoutly religious Muslim hitman in Houston protecting his children after his wife's death. The sword sequences draw directly from his years of Blade preparation. "It just all felt like the worlds were colliding all the time, every day and in every scene on that set," Ali said.

Ali's current stance is measured. "I'm actually grateful it didn't happen," he said. "The failure became a blessing in disguise. It helped me stop waiting for the golden ticket and start building my own path."
