Kit Harington has joined HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, replacing Nicholas Hoult, who departed due to scheduling conflicts ahead of the Season 2 shoot.
Hoult had been cast earlier this year as the vain Defense Against the Dark Arts professor who anchors the Chamber of Secrets story, but shifting production dates made his schedule unworkable. Season 2 filming is set to begin this fall, with Jon Brown elevated to co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner.
Harington is not new to the character. He voiced Lockhart in the Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Edition, released in late 2025. The transition from audio to screen gives the recasting an unusual internal logic: where most replacements are clean breaks, this one carries a thread. Harington is also a longtime HBO collaborator, having spent eight seasons on Game of Thrones and appearing in the ongoing drama Industry, where he will play Lord Henry Muck in the upcoming fifth and final season.
Season 1 of the Harry Potter series premieres at Christmas 2026. The Harington news marks the second high-profile departure ahead of Season 2: Gracie Cochrane, who was cast as Ginny Weasley, also exited in May 2026.
Harington takes on a role that in the books and original films operates as both comic relief and something darker. How the HBO production handles that balance is still an open question.
