TIFF 2026's Special Presentations lineup, unveiled Monday, includes The Debut as an international premiere at the festival's 51st edition. Jesse Eisenberg's third feature as a writer-director arrives on the fall circuit backed by the strongest ensemble the filmmaker has yet assembled.
The film centers on Mona Friedman (Julianne Moore), a shy woman unexpectedly cast in a community theater production of an original musical. She comes under the influence of Jerry (Paul Giamatti), a demanding director described in promotional materials as the biggest name in New Jersey community theater. The cast extends to Halle Bailey, Bernadette Peters, Havana Rose Liu, Bonnie Milligan, and Eisenberg himself.
Eisenberg's prior film, A Real Pain (2024), earned Kieran Culkin the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2025 ceremony. That film, a spare two-hander shot on location in Poland, generated its impact through restraint. The Debut operates differently: Eisenberg wrote all original songs for the film, with composer Emile Mosseri returning for a third collaboration after scoring both When You Finish Saving the World and A Real Pain. Emma Stone and Dave McCary produce through their Fruit Tree banner alongside Eisenberg and Ali Herting. Drew Daniels serves as cinematographer.
The Debut runs 105 minutes. A24 releases it in the United States on December 11, 2026, placing it squarely in the awards corridor. Whether it finds the same word-of-mouth momentum as A Real Pain will be among the season's more closely watched questions.
